Overview

ISO, or the International Organization for Standardization, is a non-governmental organization that develops and publishes international standards. ISO was founded in 1947 and has it’s headquarter in Geneva, Switzerland. It is made up of representatives from national standards bodies, with each member country having one representative. As of 2022, there are 167 members representing ISO in their country.

The organization’s mission is to develop and promote international standards that are recognized and accepted globally. ISO standards provide a framework for best practices in various industries and technologies, including quality management, environmental management, information technology, food safety, and more. ISO standards are developed through a consensus-based process involving industry experts, academics, government officials, and other stakeholders.

As of February 2023, the ISO has developed over 24,676 International standards covering everything from manufactured products & technology to food safety, agriculture, and health-care. The organization develops and publishes standardization in all technical and nontechnical fields other than electrical and electronic engineering, which is handled by the IEC. ISO standards are voluntary, but they are widely adopted by companies and organizations as a way to improve their products, services, and operations. ISO standards help to ensure consistency and interoperability between different systems and technologies, which can lead to increased efficiency, improved safety, and better quality outcomes.

ISO standards are developed and maintained by technical committees, which are made up of experts in the relevant field. It has 804 Technical committees and sub committees to take care of standards development. These committees are responsible for drafting, reviewing, and revising standards as needed. Once a standard is developed, it goes through a rigorous review and approval process before it is published.

ISO standards are used by a wide range of organizations, including businesses, governments, non-profits, and consumer groups. They are also used by certification bodies to certify compliance with ISO standards. This certification process involves a third-party audit of an organization’s operations to ensure that they meet the requirements of the relevant ISO standard.

The official languages of ISO are English, French and Russian. ISO International Standards and standards-type documents published by the Central Secretariat are usually in separate (monolingual) English (en) and French (fr) editions and, less frequently, in Russian (ru). Some standards, especially those containing terminology, are published as a bilingual (any two of the official languages), or trilingual (English/French/Russian) edition.  The ISO Central Secretariat also publishes certain official translations in non-official languages. To date, these include standards in Spanish (es) and Arabic (ar).

In summary, ISO is an international organization that develops and promotes voluntary international standards. These standards provide a framework for best practices in various industries and technologies and are widely adopted by organizations around the world.
